Keep Away Product Review:
Cats climbing Christmas trees or dogs chewing your favorite loafers
– chances are, if you own a pet you will do battle over territory
and certain possessions. For some innate reason, pets zero in on
some of our favorite possessions, or in areas where they can do
themselves physical harm.
To help safeguard our pets and our sanities, Millennium Lawns
has introduced Keep Away, an all-natural product designed to discourage
pets from venturing into off-limit areas or playing with forbidden
or dangerous objects.
During the holidays, this is an important safety point. Christmas
trees, the decorations that hang from them and many other items
associated with the holidays pose a special danger to our pets.
Owners can’t supervise their four-legged family members all
the time.
According to the company, Keep Away is a non-staining, pleasant
smelling all-natural training aid. A mint odor discourages animals
from touching surfaces or objects that have been sprayed with the
product.
Keep Away is designed specifically for use indoors. (Another product
called Trash Guard is designed to keep critters away from outdoor
trash.) The instructions are simple: Spray directly on a surface
or on a cloth and wipe the surface until damp. Re-apply every five
to seven days, and then less frequently thereafter.
The product is effective when used correctly. A shoe that our
test dog liked to chew was sprayed and then offered to our test
dog. The dog turned her nose up and walked away from what previously
had been a favorite (and forbidden) chew toy. We applied it to a
treat, and our test dog thought twice about eating it (although
dogs being dogs, she would have eventually decided to indulge herself).
Millennium Lawns suggests using the product with other methods
used to break pets of undesirable habits. For instance, pets that
like to scratch or chew should be provided with safe chew toys or
scratching posts to redirect a natural behavior to appropriate objects.
Millennium Lawn notes that Keep Away is safe to animals and that
it is exempted from federal pesticide registration laws. Advertised
as chemical free, Keep Away does suggest that owners test a small
amount in a hidden area before using.
It also cautions users to keep the spray away from eyes and to
ensure the product is not taken internally. Always keep this and
other similar products away from children. For more information,
